The Covenant Baptist Church is a diverse, multi-cultural and generational community of believers. Our church is located in the heart of West Bloomfield.  Our doors are open to all who choose to enter. Here you will find our vision, our mission, our history, and our affiliations.

Our vision is that we are an oasis of spiritual friendships on mission with Christ. Our efforts are focused on following the teachings of Jesus Christ as we strive to become that vision.

We believe that the church should be a place of refuge. a place where a person can come to share in worship, in learning more about who Christ is and what He desires for you. We believe that relationships are vitally important in the Christian's life, our focus is on developing a place where spiritual friendships can grow and thrive.

We believe that every Christian is called to be on mission. As missionaries in our culture, we are to strategically communicate the message of Christ.

This is Christ’s mission. Jesus has gone before us and His Spirit continues to lead us. The Holy Spirit helps us to depend on God’s Word as the ultimate authority for our lives and the foundation of our faith.

"You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. The second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' No other commandment is greater than these." Mark 12:30,31.

"Jesus came and told his disciples, "I have been given complete authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20.

The Covenant Baptist Church was born in a rented room over a saloon on Detroit's Russell Street in 1894. The East Side neighborhood was anything but affluent. Detroit and the rest of the nation were still reeling from a major economic depression. Undaunted by hard times, folks at the Woodward Avenue Baptist Church felt led to launch a new mission outreach. Thus we began on November 21, 1894, when 32 pioneering individuals gathered around the potbelly stove and worshipped under our first name: Olivet Baptist Church.

"Without vision, the people perish," we are told in Proverbs. We are thankful for the thousands of people over the past 109 years whose prayers and efforts have allowed our church to experience these years of fellowship. There have been five names and six locations. Olivet soon changed to Ferry Avenue, then Maranatha (on East Grand Boulevard), Dexter Boulevard, and since 1942, The Covenant Baptist Church. We came from the James Couzens location (now home to Hartford Memorial Baptist Church) to our present building in West Bloomfield in 1977.

We have been served with the leadership skills of fifteen senior pastors, twenty associate pastors, and four interim pastors through our history.

Covenant is a community of people who continue to seek God's guidance. We come from many cultural and racial backgrounds, a wide geographic area, and diverse religious roots. We are united in our quest to serve Him who made us. As we think of those who have gone before us, we must remember our challenge towards the future. As the missionary Adoniram Judson put it, "The future is as bright as the promises of God."
